GNOME marketing needs YOU!

It is a critical time for the GNOME 3 marketing effort. People are already helping by responding to press queries, working on the new gnome.org website, sending out release party goodies, creating videos and generally spreading good vibes. But we need more. We need you to help us. Yes, YOU!

There’s no shortage of GNOME 3 marketing tasks. Here are just some of them:

  • Blogging: we need blog posts about cool things in GNOME 3, or about things you have contributed towards and are proud of. (This sounds trivial, but it is something we’re in serious need of.)
  • Editorial support: there is lots of text being produced right now. It needs to be checked to ensure quality and accuracy.
  • A set of GNOME 3 graphics hardware documentation: some guidance on graphics card/driver combinations in relation to GNOME 3 (this might have to be done on a per distro basis; it needs someone to volunteer as a maintainer of the resource).
  • GNOME on Wikipedia: the GNOME and GNOME Shell Wikipedia pages aren’t in good shape. (They’re really out of date, for starters.)
  • A one page release notes template (like this one: http://mairin.wordpress.com/2009/11/13/fedora-12-one-page-release-notes-pdf/)
  • A GNOME 3 presentation slide template (see http://mail.gnome.org/archives/marketing-list/2011-March/msg00092.html).

One particular area where we need help is gnome3.org. There are lots of additions that would improve the site:

  • Follow us buttons for Twitter and Identica
  • A Facebook ‘Like’ button
  • One of Andreas’s snazzy page footers, like the one on the t-shirt contest site
  • A countdown clock type thing
  • Information on which distros will be shipping GNOME 3
  • Creative Commons licensing
  • More content! We want to have information for users, and we need to expand the FAQ.

Many of these tasks aren’t huge, but they would make a real difference to the campaign. If you are unsure about any of them, just get in touch (#marketing on irc.gnome.org or the marketing list). Otherwise, just jump in.

  1. “A set of GNOME 3 graphics hardware documentation: some guidance on graphics card/driver combinations in relation to GNOME 3 (this might have to be done on a per distro basis; it needs someone to volunteer as a maintainer of the resource).”

    Useful data for this:

    https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2011-02-22_Nouveau
    https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2011-02-23_Radeon
    https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2011-02-24_Intel

(note the ‘QA:Testcase_xxxxx_gnome3’ results on those)

    https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2011-02-03_GNOME3_Alpha
    https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Test_Day:2011-03-10_GNOME3_Beta

(on those, if a reasonable number of tests are filled in, you can assume that Shell worked)

for all of the above, there’s a ‘HW’ link for each tester (most, anyway) which links to a Smolt profile from which you can identify the graphics card.
